The group kicked off the month of December by performing in the Mint Hill Christmas Tree Lighting celebration on the 1st. Next the group sang at the Town of Matthews Christmas Tree Lighting celebration.  At both performances the group sang seasonal favorites such as “Drummer Boy” and “Baby, it’s Cold Outside.”
Next up, the choir plans to go caroling at a local retirement home later this month!

YCI helps at the Special Olympics http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2016/02/09/yci-helps-at-the-special-olympics/ http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2016/02/09/yci-helps-at-the-special-olympics/#respond Tue, 09 Feb 2016 13:20:43 +0000 http://www.queensgranthigh.org/?p=6143 The YCI Club, Christian Youth Club, served at the Special Olympics Bowling event on Friday, January 29, 2016. 30 students attended along with  Mr. Coleman, Mrs. Braswell and 5 parent volunteers. Each of our students were responsible for 4 participants during the day. Students kept score, made sure participants knew when they were up to bowl and passed out the medals and awards to the participants. Most important of all, we were there to encourage, cheer on and treat these students as peers. Our students were able to get to know each of the Special Olympics athletes that they were responsible for during the event. Chuck Dellinger, with Special Olympics, gave our group the best compliment as we were leaving, saying that in 25 years he hadn’t had a group that served, interacted with the students, listened and followed his instructions like our students did.  He invited us back and told our students how impressed he was with them! It was amazing day and we are looking forward to volunteering again.

QG fights against Breast Cancer http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2015/12/09/qg-fights-against-breast-cancer/ http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2015/12/09/qg-fights-against-breast-cancer/#respond Wed, 09 Dec 2015 21:38:17 +0000 http://www.queensgranthigh.org/?p=6068 Student council members had a passion to help those suffering with Breast Cancer. This past October, the council members decided to be proactive by starting a new QG tradition of “QG Pink Day”. Students donated $1.00 to wear pink items, purchased pink cup cakes, and pink lemonade! The students raised $250.00 for Carolinas Breast Friends!  Here are just a few facts worth knowing about breast cancer:

  • 1 in 8 women will receive a breast cancer diagnoses in their lifetime
  • According to the World Health Organization  Breast Cancer is the most widely form of cancer for women world wide
  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.
  • Each year it is estimated that over 230,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.

Thank you to all the QG students who participated in Pink day. Your generosity will help those who suffer from this dreaded disease in their fight for a cure!

Pasta for Pennies http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2015/12/08/pasta-for-pennies/ http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2015/12/08/pasta-for-pennies/#respond Tue, 08 Dec 2015 23:54:45 +0000 http://www.queensgranthigh.org/?p=6066 Queen’s Grant High School is currently raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Our first week of the drive we raised $229.51. We have two weeks left to go to reach our goal of $2500. Cancer doesn’t discriminate and QGHS is no exception. QG students know that we are not in the fight for someone else but “someone” that is our very own.

Student Council is leading the way with a Penny Wars Drive!  Student Council participates in the Chick fil A leader Academy which teaches students about leading by example through their “Do Good December” project.  Student Council has placed positive cash boxes and sabotage cash boxes in each of the classrooms across our campus.  The student body is “warring” among other 4th period classes to see who can raise the most money!  The fun is that other classes can sabotage a class. Just when one class thinks they are in the lead, another class might “sabotage” their effort!

All the fun raises the most amount of change possible to help drive for a cure! Stay tuned for updates as the QG Penny Wars continue! Help join the fight and give to the QG Drive today! You can participate by donating online at http://events.lls.org/pages/nc/QueensGrantPrepHighSchool

QG hosts a Blood Drive http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2015/12/08/qg-hosts-a-blood-drive/ http://www.queensgranthigh.org/2015/12/08/qg-hosts-a-blood-drive/#respond Tue, 08 Dec 2015 22:35:18 +0000 http://www.queensgranthigh.org/?p=6064 Queen’s Grant High School’s annual fall blood drive was held on October 1st. We collected 36 productive units of blood, which will help 108 local patients.  QGHS partners with Community Blood Center of the Carolinas so that all of the donations stay here in our local community of Charlotte.

So why does QGHS have an annual blood drive?  Community hospitals rely heavily on donations from schools and large corporations being committed to hosting annual blood drives. Less than 10% of the US population that is eligible to donate does so.  Every viable pint donated saves 3 lives! Blood is not something that can be manufactured so those that are in need are dependent on others to donate.  Donating blood is a life saving act of kindness that is fairly easy for most of us to do.

Our goal is to make it convenient for those who are willing to donate to be able to conveniently do so without driving a long way, or taking a lot of time away from work and or family.  We strive to be a dependable successful donation site for our students and community to participate while helping our local community hospitals save lives.

You can contribute to our success this spring by going ahead and marking your calendars for our next Blood drive. It will be held on April 22, 2016. We look forward to you helping us meet our goal!
